Richard Mille's friends tend to play sports that are not known for being kind to luxury watches. And yet they all wear their Richard Milles in the heat of the action. Rafa Nadal wins tennis championships with his Richard Mille on his wrist. Felipe Massa drives F1 cars wearing his.
And Bubba Watson plays golf.
What's so dangerous about pro golf, you might ask. It's just a good walk ruined, right? Actually, there's an awful lot to be scared of on the golf course (if you're a luxury watch). Getting hit by a ball during practice, for a start. Given the ticket price of a Richard Mille RM055 Bubba Watson All Black (otherwise known as the RM055 AN Ti), you don't want hard objects striking the sapphire crystal with a sharp impact. And then there are the mechanics of a powerful golf swing – the explosion of movement through the core of the body, the rapid twist of the wrist, the transferred impact through the club shaft and into the delicate workings of the watch. Imagine the havoc a solid swing like Bubba's can wreak on a manually-wound skeleton movement.
To combat this, Richard Mille created a calibre (RMUL2) that can withstand an acceleration of 500 Gs (which would be enough, in the right circumstances, to kill you). The movement is skeletonised, as Richard Mille movements always are, and held in place with grade 5 titanium bridges and baseplate. Unlike some Richard Mille calibres, however, which can look as though they have been stacked tightly into the case, the RMUL2 movement appears to hover inside the RM055 Bubba Watson All Black. This effect is achieved by attaching the calibre to the interior flanges using four screws: two on the far corners and two on the edges of the crown.
The movement is three-handed, powering central hours, minutes and seconds with a 55-hour power reserve. The hands are thick and visible, and are applied with lume arrows to give a night view that is – for a Richard Mille watch – very good. The seconds hand is tipped in red, adding the tiniest contrast. The hour markers are lumed pips.
Front and rear crystals are sapphire, treated in both cases with a double-sided dose of anti-glare coating. The result is a clear vision of the movement in almost any light.
The bezels and casebands are in titanium, with a rubberised bracelet fastened on a double-fold titanium clasp. The case is waterproof to 30 m—sufficient to play a round of golf in the rain, but not so watertight it can be taken diving. The diameter of this luxury watch is 49.9 mm, lug to lug. And the price tag? Like every Richard Mille, if you need to ask you probably don't want to know. Suffice to say that if Bubba ever did break his on the course, the cost of replacement would be similar to the cost of a new sports car. Fortunately, the Bubba Watson All Black is designed to take a direct hit from a golf ball without complaint, thanks to the unique bezel. Formed from ATZ (alumina-toughened zirconia) ceramic, it's extra-strong and super-stiff. Fore!
